In June 2010 I took voluntary redundancy from The Times newspaper where I held the role of online special reports editor. I took a break from journalism in order to volunteer for environmental projects in Australasia and South East Asia, including developing marketing and PR opportunities for eco-tourism holiday providers in Thailand and Australia. I also wrote and performed stand-up comedy in America and New Zealand and Australia, including establishing a comedy night on Waiheke island off the coast of Auckland. I am also the first Western comic to perform in Cambodia.
Since my full-time return to London I have further established my interest in sustainability and gender issues, which I believe are related. Sustainability is an empowerment tool and I see it as a way to help people, women in particular, to raise their self-esteem. From a writing perspective, I cover the subject of food sustainability for The Grocer magazine. I also write about experiential marketing for The Grocer and would actually love to be more involved in this area not just as an observer but also as an ideas consultant and project manager.
My career over the past 15 years has seen me in many incarnations. From starting out writing about rave music for regional music magazines to social affairs reporter covering hard news, including 9/11 from New York, at The Birmingham Post to a feature writer and editor on trade magazines. My last role at The Times provided me with a wealth of experience in areas such as video scripting and production, blogging, website creation and design along with commissioning and editing.
I am now aiming to bring all of this excellent work experience together with my life experience and personal interests to forge a freelance career in journalism and public relations.
Specialist areas
Social issues related to women, including relationships, friendships, work psychology and education. In my previous role as an online editor for The Times newspaper I regularly contributed comment pieces to the blogs Alpha Mummy and School Gate. I now continue to write about these issues in my own blog and for magazines including Professional Manager. During a previous period of freelancing I wrote extensively for Regeneration & Renewal magazine and at The Times I contributed to the Green Central blog. Through volunteering for eco projects while on my travels and now my involvement with the Transition Towns organisation I have continued that interest in sustainability and the environment. I write about food sustainability in particular for The Grocer magazine.
