A senior lecturer in sports journalism at the University of Brighton, where I edit the website overtimeonline.co.uk, I have written for – and served on the desks of – most if not quite all the national newspaper titles in England and Australia, notably the Guardian, the Independent, the Financial Times, the Melbourne Age, the Sunday Telegraph and Sunday Times, where I was deputy sports editor. A contributor to magazines ranging from Record Mirror, City Limits, India Today and Marxism Today to Observer Sports Monthly and Mojo, I have also written more than a dozen non-fiction books, winning the Cricket Society Literary Award for my biography of David Gower and the runner-up medal for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year with Spring, Summer Autumn. My study of 1970s football, The Mavericks, was recently named one of Four-Four-Two magazine's “Top 50 Football Books You Must Read”. In 2005 I won the UK section of the “For diversity, against discrimination” EU Journalism awards, for an investigation into the decline of Anglo-Caribbean cricketers. In 2007, Routledge published my first textbook, Sports Journalism - A Multimedia Primer, and Cricinfo, the world's leading cricket website, began publishing my blog, "Rob's Lobs". This autumn is scheduled to see the release of "Phantom Punch", a movie biopic starring Ving Rhames based on my biography of the boxer Sonny Liston. I currently write columns for Cricinfo and Thecricketer.com. I am also editing the Cambridge Companion to Football and writing a history of sport.
