Vivienne Crow is an award-winning freelance writer and photographer, specialising in all things to do with the outdoors, particularly the Lake District. A journalist since 1990, she gave up her desk job as a newspaper sub-editor in 2001 to go travelling for a year. On her return to the UK, she decided to focus on the activities she loves the most – hill-walking, writing, travelling and photography. Needless to say, she's never looked back!
She now writes and provides photography for a number of magazines, including TGO (The Great Outdoors), Camping, Lakeland Walker, Cumbria, MMM and Cumbria Life, and has regular walking columns in several newspapers in the north of England. Keen walkers may already be familiar with the popular walking guidebooks that she has written for the Lake District and Cumbria, and she has also written or contributed to several travel guides.
Although she is passionate about Cumbria and the north of England, Vivienne does leave her adopted home from time to time. Her travel features – on subjects as diverse as sea-kayaking off Vancouver Island, trekking in Romania and bus travel through China – have appeared in The Sydney Morning Herald, Countryfile, Scanorama (SAS's inflight magazine), The Scotsman and other publications.
She also works for conservation and tourism bodies, researching and writing walks leaflets and interpretation panels. Her clients in this area have included Scottish Natural Heritage, the National Trust, Nurture Lakeland, North Pennines AONB, Eden Rivers Trust and East Cumbria Countryside Project.
Vivienne is a member of the Outdoor Writers and Photographers Guild and the National Union of Journalists.
