Between July 2008 and December 2014, I edited Civil Service World - the trade magazine for senior civil servants in the UK, covering leadership and management issues, policy and politics. In October 2013 I was made editorial director of Dods' Public Sector Division, and implemented a change programme involving the launch of a new website hosting all of our news content, and the relaunch of our fortnightly tabloid newspaper as a glossy monthly magazine.
Prior to that, between 2002 and 2008 I was the features editor of Haymarket's weekly news magazine Regeneration & Renewal, covering physical development, economic growth and community renewal. I began my journalistic career in 1995, working on lifestyle and motoring titles then, between 1999 and 2001, mounting a Land Rover expedition across four continents whilst working as a freelance photo-journalist.
I've also worked as a sub-editor and as director of communications for think tank the Institute for Government, and have strong skills in commissioning and editing plus excellent contacts across the senior ranks of the civil service and in Westminster.
Specialist areas
In recent years I've specialised in writing on government, policymaking, public services and management issues, though I also have strong experience in urban design, physical development and the built environment; local authorities, devolution and economic growth; sustainability and conservation; international security and defence; & motoring and overland travel.
