Three years ago, after 20 years' experience in the regional press, I became a freelance journalist/writer.
My portfolio is now quite diverse: from writing and sub-editing for a glossy lifestyle magazine in the Midlands to commissioning articles for a heavyweight financial publication for international CEOs/investment executives and pretty much anything in between.
I am a regular copywriter for Englemed - a health news website for medics - and produce commissioned features for Fine Art Collector.
I also work with PR companies, writing releases and helping with newsletters/articles for trade, and have been working with Tarmac's press office on its community-based press coverage.
Commissions include: Birmingham City University; Open University; University of Birmingham; Birmingham City Council; Eley; Writing West Midlands; Tarmac; Financial Bridges; Touchbase; Fine Art Collector; Passionate Media; Imagine Communications; Lois Burley PR.
Other work: leading journalism workshops in schools as part of the Write On! project, which is run by the Birmingham Book Festival; book editing for independent publishers.
I have some B2B experience: writing, editing and page layout (InDesign), as well as commissioning articles and writing advertorials.
I also write occasional reviews for Carousel, the quarterly magazine produced by the Federation of Children's Book Groups. I was the 2009 publicity officer for the Federation's prestigious award, The Red House Children's Book Award.
I spent 15 years on The Birmingham Post, where I worked on news, before moving to the features dept in 1999. Working on a busy, daily regional newspaper has given me the experience to work quickly, effectively and to deadline. I produce page-ready copy that is well-researched and written to suit the audience. My exacting standards means the work that I provide is grammatically correct.
I have held a number of positions on The Birmingham Post:
News: general news reporter; environment correspondent; home affairs correspondent; some news desk.
Features: page editor (designer and sub editor/proof reader using PageSpeed and InDesign); travel editor; books editor; children's book editor; writer, reviewer; interviewer.
I was part of a small team that produced the Post's Weekend magazine and commissioned pieces for the pages.
