For a decade and more, I've been a professional journalist. I first worked as a reporter for a small town newspaper in the high mountains of Colorado in 1996, and later started my own magazine, and then owned and ran another newspaper. In 2006, I began working with High Country News, a small, but award-winning, critically-acclaimed news magazine covering the issues of the American West. I served as editor-in-chief from 2007 to 2010, and also wrote stories about immigration, the environment, renewable energy and tribal issues.
In June 2010, my family and I moved to Berlin, Germany, where I did freelance editing and writing work, with a number of stories published on politics, the global economy, energy, immigration and travel. Now I am based out of Boulder, Colo., where I am a Ted Scripps Fellow in environmental journalism at the University of Colorado, Boulder. I travel back to Berlin often, as my family continues to live there.
I am available for freelance work both in the American West and in Berlin and Europe.
