In recent years, I've mainly worked as a freelance editor for legal associations and law firms. My most recent client was the Association of Costs Lawyers, where I edited the organisation's bimonthly magazine. Before that, I edited the annual review of CMS, a pan-European law network.
I’ve also provided writing, editing and blogging services for LexisNexis Martindale-Hubbell. Here, I mainly worked on in-depth research reports, covering topics as diverse as law firms’ use of social media to why corporate counsel select and retain specific legal practices. My journalistic articles on these topics have appeared in legal trade magazines around the world, including Asian Legal Business, The Lawyers Weekly (Canada), Top Legal International (Italy) and Law Business Review (UK).
On several occasions, I’ve provided freelance support for contract publishers and PR companies who required specialist legal copywriting services. One of my most recent clients was Rostrum Communications, where I helped draft "though leadership" articles for a major international law firm. I've also worked with Words Work on a legal case report project for the Office of Fair Trading, and with Prima PR & Marketing in providing editorial coverage the LawNet legal network. Other communications clients have included Coast Communications on behalf of the Professional Services Marketing Group.
Finally, I’ve also worked on projects with a strong academic flavour. Recent clients have included the UK’s Legal Services Board and a consortium of universities.
Between December 2000 – March 2007 I worked for The European Lawyer Ltd. I initially wrote features for The European Lawyer magazine, covering developments in the European legal market.
Between March 1999– December 2000 I worked as a project manager at hemscottlegal.com, an innovative direct recruitment website for junior lawyers.
From September 1998 – February 1999 I worked in Nabarro's marketing office on a short-term assignment to boost the firm's media profile. My main role was to produce news release for the non-legal trade press.
I worked at Chambers & Partners between September 1996 – August 1998. I wrote legal and law firm management article for The Commercial Lawyer, and carried out research for the Chambers & Partners Guide to the Legal Profession.
Specialist areas
I am a freelance legal journalist, researcher and and copywriter, based in Cardiff, Wales. I have 20 years' experience of legal publishing. During that time, I have held a wide variety of editorial and project management-related positions. I hold two law degrees, and recently completed a PhD which explored the geographies of large law firms. I specialise in writing about the UK, EU and US legal markets. I mainly write about the management and strategies of law firms and in-house legal departments, but can also cover technical legal issues if required. Besides conventional legal journalism, I also handle legal PR and corporate report work. This work includes drafting lawyer biographies, and also writing and editing in-depth research reports. I am actively looking for short-term freelance editorial / copywriting opportunities in the legal sector.
